Count the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs of any text as you type. The tool also estimates reading and speaking time, lists your most repeated keywords and shows how close you are to the limit of an X post, an SMS or a meta description. Your text stays in your browser.

How to count the words in a text

  1. Type or paste your text into the box above. The numbers update instantly.
  2. Read the word count, the characters with and without spaces, the sentences, the paragraphs and the reading and speaking time.
  3. Check the length bars for X (280 characters), SMS (160) and meta description (160), and the keyword table to spot words you repeat too often.

Why count the words of your text?

Many texts come with a limit: a school essay asks for 1,000 words, an X post stops at 280 characters, a text message at 160 and a search result description is cut after roughly 160 characters. Keyword density also helps you notice a word you overuse, and the reading time tells you whether an article or a speech will fit the time you have.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free?

Yes. It’s free, with no sign-up and no limit on how much text you can check.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Everything is counted in your browser. Your text is only saved on your device if you tick “Save my text in this browser”, and the Clear text button removes it.

How does it count words?

Any run of letters or numbers counts as a word. Hyphenated words, apostrophes (don’t, l’été), links and email addresses count as one word. Accented letters are counted correctly, and Chinese, Japanese and Thai text is split into words by your browser when it supports it.

How are reading time and speaking time calculated?

Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute and speaking time about 150 words per minute. They are estimates and vary from person to person.

Which limits does it check?

X posts (280 characters), SMS (160, or 70 when the text has characters outside the standard SMS alphabet, such as emoji) and meta descriptions (160). All counts include spaces.
