How to crop an image

  1. Drop an image into the box above, or click to choose it.
  2. Move the box and its handles to select the area to keep. Pick a ratio for a fixed shape, or leave it on Free. You can also rotate or flip the picture, and use the arrow keys for precise changes (hold Shift for bigger steps).
  3. Choose the output format, then click “Download cropped image”.

Why crop your photos?

Cropping removes what you don’t need and puts the focus on your subject. It is also the quickest way to get the right shape for where the picture will be used: a 1:1 square for a profile photo, 4:5 for a portrait Instagram post, 16:9 for a video thumbnail or a slide, 9:16 for a story. If you crop before you publish, you decide exactly what stays in the frame.

Frequently asked questions

Is this crop tool free?

Yes. It’s free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Your image is cropped directly in your browser and never leaves your device.

How do I crop a photo into a square?

Click 1:1 and the crop box becomes a square. Move it where you want, and use the handles to make it larger or smaller.

Can I crop to an exact size in pixels?

Yes. The Left, Top, Width and Height fields under the picture accept exact values in pixels. With a fixed ratio, changing the width updates the height.

Can I rotate or flip the image?

Yes. Rotate it 90° to the left or right, or flip it horizontally or vertically. The crop is then applied to the changed picture.

Which formats are supported?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and, if your browser supports it, AVIF, then save as JPG, PNG, WebP or the original format. The tool crops one image at a time.
